Being a Big Brother

So far Nicholas is great at being a big brother. He lets us know when the baby is crying and when he needs his diaper changed. He loves to shove the pacifier, upside down, into the babies mouth, whether or not he wants it! His favorite thing to do is "pet" the baby, which includes rubbing his head and forehead gently with his hand. It's really the cutest thing. He always gives him a kiss when he leaves and it has to be on his forehead for some reason. We'll see how things go this week when it's just me and the two kids . . .

A Merry Christmas

Nicholas loved Christmas this year! He spread reindeer food outside in the backyard on Christmas Eve, as well as leaving a ton of cookies for Santa with some milk. He had to go outside and check to see if the reindeer really ate the food! He ran right to the pile of presents and didn't even notice his ride on dump truck until Jason pointed it out to him. Then he flew over there and wouldn't get off for quite some time! He tore into all of his presents making Jason take everything out of the package as he continued to tear through everything. We all really enjoyed watching him. He was beside himself when he opened the snow plow that he asked Santa for over and over and over again. Christopher lay quietly in his bed, probably dreaming of the presents he is going to open next year!

Early Christmas Present

Nicholas' baby brother, Christopher, has arrived! He is a great sleeper so far and Nicholas loves him! He likes to give him his pacifier (and also take it away just as fast) and pet and kiss him. It is too cute! We are all settling in for Santa's big arrival tomorrow night, Nicholas is so excited. He has been singing Christmas songs for weeks now. I'm just happy we aren't spending Christmas in the hospital!

Mr. Blanky's Wild Adventure

Nicholas took Mr. Blanky, a blue blanket with a puppy head that he sleeps with every night and needs when he is upset, for a ride in Dad's truck to pick up a pizza for him and Lauren last night. Nicholas rolled down the window while driving on busy Bell Shoals and Mr. Blanky blew right out the window. He landed in the street behind them and to Nicholas' great dismay, was run over several times by the cars flying by. He started screaming and crying that daddy needed to rescue Mr. Blanky. Jason pulled over and pretty much risked his life to save Mr. Blanky. The rude drivers could see that Jason was trying to save Mr. Blanky but continued to drive over him as Nicholas watched. Finally Mr. Blanky was rescued and, to all of our relief, was not harmed. I don't think Mr. Blanky will be going for any car rides for quite some time.

Christmas Program

Nicholas and Sebastien were the stars of the Christmas program today! Even though Sebastien was a little louder than Nicholas, the two of them were the ones I could hear the most! Nicholas was even doing the motions and watching Mrs. Hight for the cues. He has really come out of his shell this year. I was so proud of him, it was so adorable to watch!

Pottery Painting

Today we went to make ornaments with some of our friends at the Pottery Place. Hannah painted her reindeer brown and made a little face. Isabella painted the bow on her present red and then the package green. Sebastien painted his stocking blue with some little decorations. Nicholas swirled all the paint together to make a nice orange-black-brown combo and then painted his reindeer, snowman, and penguin all the same. It will be very interesting to see what they look like when they come out of the kiln!

Feliz Navidad

Nicholas has gone from Merry Christmas to Feliz Navidad thanks to his Spanish teacher. It was cute at first but at 6:00 am this morning, not so much.

Gatorland

We had a great time at Gatorland as always. The whole front building burnt down but the rest of the park seemed fine. Nicholas tried to feed the gators but they weren't hungry. Unfortunately, the birds were starving and were dive bombing us for the hotdogs. Nicholas and I were not at all happy. The huge gators were laying up on the banks and we couldn't believe how big they were. Usually when we go, they are all in the water and they don't seem as big and intimidating. I think because it was cooler they were all piled onto the banks, it was amazing to see them like that. Even Nicholas kept saying how big they were. My plan hasn't worked yet, maybe tomorrow . . .

Gingerbread House

Today we put together a beautiful gingerbread house while Jason was at work. The house came already assembled, we just made the frosting and added the candy. We tried all of the candies but Nicholas spit most of them out. We are getting in all the Christmas cheer we can before the baby comes because we will all be so tired! Last weekend we went to the Lowry Park Zoo to see Santa and all the lights at night. Even though it wasn't cold we drank hot chocolate just to get in the spirit! Tomorrow we are going to try to go to ICE! in Orlando to see the sculptures and we have to fit in Outdoor World for dad if we are going to be in Orlando anyway. I'll probably get roped into Gatorland, too. Maybe all that activity will make the baby come quicker. . .

The Move and Thanksgiving

We finally moved into our new house on Wednesday, just in time to rush around unpacking so we would have things for Thanksgiving dinner! Nicholas is really enjoying our new house. He has been so good while we are unpacking, putting away, hanging curtains, building closet organizers, and everything else. He has woken up at least once each night but I think that will stop soon. He really loves his swing set in the backyard and keeps dragging everyone out there. Alli went up the stairs for no reason all by herself today. We have had to either carry or drag her until now. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!

Already Sleepless

The new baby isn't even here yet we are still sleepless at our house. First the alarm went off at Jason's shop so the two of us were up. When we arrived home, my mom was up with Nicholas who was screaming for his daddy. From 1:30 until around 4 there was rain and thunder and Nicholas was awake, as were the rest of us, for the entire time. I think all of us will be ready for bed tonight around 6!

Happy Day After Halloween!

Halloween was much more successful this year than last. Nicholas wore his costume and was cute as can be as an alligator. He made Jason dress up like a hunter (he wore a camouflage shirt) and he made me put my Halloween head band on. We went next door to Toni and Peter's house and then I went home to hand out candy while they went off trick or treating. They were back in about 20 minutes. Nicholas went to five houses and then said, "I'm hot dad, let's go home and see mama." Jason was not complaining and so home they came. Uncle Markie came over and had dinner with us but missed seeing Nicholas in his costume. Then Nicholas helped me put candy in the trick or treaters bags. It was a fun night!

Sebastien's Halloween Party

Nicholas and Jason had a blast at Sebastien's Halloween Party. Nicholas wore his costume even though his dad didn't wear his. The kids wrapped Jason up in toilet paper like a mummy until Nicholas decided he didn't like it and started unwrapping him. They also ate spider cupcakes and picked treasure out of a treasure chest. Thanks Joe and Kristyn!

You're Late, Dad

Nicholas went into the bedroom this morning and Jason was still laying in bed. So Nicholas said, "Hurry up Dad! You are late and Grampa is going to yell at you!" I guess we know who Nicholas thinks the boss is!

"What's this, Mama?"

There I am, standing in the kitchen, making breakfast so we can dash out the door to the dentist. Nicholas comes over and I hear his little voice say, "What's this, Mama?" I look down and he is holding a dead, petrified frog. This frog is not a tiny frog and there it is, hanging down by it's leg between Nicholas' two fingers. What is my reaction you are wondering . . . "Drop that Nicholas, quick, right there, drop it!!!!!!!" He just innocently looks up at me. More urgently I say, "LET GO OF IT! WE NEED TO WASH YOUR HANDS!" So he drops it, finally, and asks, "Why do I have to wash my hands? What is it?" I calmly say, "It's a dead frog and full of germs, let's go wash your hands in my bathroom so daddy can come out here and put that in the trash." We walk into the bathroom and Jason is laughing. He continued to smirk and laugh at me until he left for work.

First Field Trip

Nicholas went on his first Field Trip yesterday to the firestation. He absolutely loved it! He climbed all over the fire truck with the other kids. I was really surprised because usually when I am there he hangs back and doesn't like a crowd. He was just so excited that he followed the other kids through the backseat of the truck, tried on the helmet, and walked through the kitchen and family room without me. I can't believe how much he has changed, last year I would have been holding him the whole time. He's such a big boy!

What a Push Over!

Jason's goal for this weekend is to work on the new house so we can maybe move in before the new baby, Nathan Gordon Woods, is born. So this morning we get up and pretend that dad is going to work like a normal day. Only Nicholas can some how sense that it is Saturday and daddy is supposed to take him to ride the trucks. So he starts crying and clinging to me like his life is so horrible. Jason watches for all of about five minutes and ends up asking Nicholas if he wants to go to work with daddy just for a couple of hours. Won't it be enjoyable for me when Jason brings him home and then I whisk Nicholas off for his flu shot? It's tough to be the mom!

I Missed You

Usually when I pick Nicholas up from school his first words are, "Can Bash come over and play?" But today his first words were "I missed you, Mom!" followed by, "Can Bash come over?"

What We're Learning in Preschool

Not only is Nicholas getting an education from his wonderful teacher, Mrs. Hight, but also from the other students. He is now calling people names, hitting us with fist and saying "BAM!", and saying things like "Jesus poops." Some of the things he is picking up are entertaining, but that "BAM!" is really starting to drive me crazy. We are at the point now where he has to go to time out when he "BAMS!" because he is even hitting my extra large stomach. I do enjoy it when he sings the songs he has learned like Old McDonald, though. He also uses the Spanish words for colors and french fries that he is learning. I guess I just have to take the good with the bad!

The Reptile Show

Oh yes, we went to a reptile show today. The Fada's dragged us along to see the creepy creatures that they love! Nicholas and Sebastien both held an alligator and had their pictures taken. I can't believe how many different kinds of snakes, lizards, turtles, and spiders there are. It was better than the zoo or aquarium! Plus, their soft pretzels were delicious!

Nana's Visit

Nicholas had a great time with his Nana this past week. He wanted to go home with her and Maggie this morning. His favorite thing to do with her was pick up the dog poop in the backyard. This morning he even held the bag open for her and sniffed after she put it in. I'm going to miss her doing the dishes and laundry!

The Phantom Stomach Ache

Sebastien left school early today for an appointment. A short time later I received a phone call from the office that Nicholas had a stomach ache. When I arrived to pick him up he looked suspiciously fine. Once we were home, he ate mozzerrella, the frosting off of two cupcakes, and drank a whole sippy of apple juice. When I asked him if he wanted to come home because Sebastien left, the answer was yes.

Sesame Street

We went to see Sesame Street with Sebastien, Kristyn, and Joe this weekend. The boys lasted almost through the first half. I think there is only so much singing and dancing they can take. Then we bought them Elmo balloons which the ran around with in the suite. Once the second half started and the two of them were rolling around on the floor, we knew they had had enough!

MIA

Yes, Nicholas was MIA yesterday for about 3 minutes. Every afternoon I try to get on the treadmill while Nicholas watches a little TV. Usually he comes in to visit about halfway through. Yesterday I noticed that he didn't make his usual stop and try to touch the treadmill. When I finished, I went out into the family room to peak at him and he wasn't there. So I looked in his room, the playroom, Jabu's crate, the bathroom, the patio, the sandbox, the garage, everywhere I could think of. I was screaming Nicholas at the top of my lungs by the time I looked on the patio. There was not a peep to be heard. I went into the family room to turn down the TV and when I turned I noticed a blanket all scrunched up on the rocking chair. I ran over and pulled it down only to find Nicholas all slouched over and sound asleep.

Captain Woods

We can't decide what to name the new baby so we keep asking Nicholas for suggestions. Every time we ask he replies, "Captain, let's name him Captain."

The Last Day of Swimming Lessons

Today is Nicholas' last lesson. On Wednesday he jumped in with his shorts, shirt, and sneakers and had to swim across the pool. He did great until she threw a wet shirt over his face and he left it there! I think he was surprised and not sure if it was OK to push it off. He finally did after what seemed like forever. Then on Thursday he jumped in with shoes, long pants, and a long shirt and swam across the pool. Today will be an easy day, just diving for rings on the bottom of the pool and snorkeling. Next year he'll learn the crawl and side strokes.

Picture Day

Today was Nicholas' first school picture day. He wanted to wear his white uniform shirt which was fine with me. He would not go for a haircut yesterday but that doesn't matter either. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Little Fish in the Sea

We have ourselves a little fish who will not get out of the sea! Nicholas is swimming all the way across the pool by himself! He jumps into the deep end and then swims into the shallow end. We can't get over the change in just three short weeks. He finishes swimming lessons this week, just four more classes to go! We are so proud of him!

Saturday, August 26, 2006

What Did You Just Say?

Here are some interesting things that have come out of Nicholas' mouth lately. "You are not my friend, mommy." "Daddy is going to be mad at you for taking my truck away." "Daddy is going to put you in timeout." "Daddy is my friend, not yours." "I am going to put you in jail mommy." "You hurt my feelings, say you are sorry." "No I am NOT!" "Don't talk to me that way mommy."

The Best Swimmer Ever!

After only two lessons, Nicholas can swim "under the sea" as he calls it! He can go from the steps to me, from one side of the pool to the other (the short way) and from me to the steps! It is amazing! He counts to three and then he is under the water with his eyes open while kicking his little feet! I am so proud of him!

His Teeth Hurt

The sores have begun in his mouth so he keeps saying his teeth hurt. We are going to the Doctor this afternoon, there is a mouthwash he can use to make his mouth feel better and keep it from spreading any more than it has. Poor little guy.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Nicholas has come down with hand, foot, and mouth disease. One of his friends, I won't name names, it could have come from anyone, came down with it last week. It consists of a fever for a couple days, then rash, then blisters which turn into sores. We are on day two of the fever. Last night Nicholas threw up, luckily only once. This led to Jason washing his hands as if to scrub the skin away and then taking the hand sanitizer and rubbing gobs of it all over his hands, arms, and even elbows! It was quite a sight!

The Second Day of School

It's as if a different child woke up on Thursday morning all ready for school. The first words out of his mouth were "Can I put on my school shirt like Bash's?" Then he held still while I finished dressing him and even had his sneakers on before 8:00. When Kristyn pulled in the driveway so we could follow her and the boys could walk in together, Nicholas acted as if I was the one holding us up. I took a much better picture of him and one with Sebastien. I guess Bash rules and mom drools in Nicholas' book.

The First Day of School

As is typical of my life, the first day of school did not go as planned. To sum it up, Nicholas would not get dressed, put on his sneakers, or get in the car. We were an hour late and we had to bring in three trucks. There were lots of tears, yelling, kicking, and screaming. Hopefully the second day will go better and I can take the picture of my dreams and pretend it happened on the first day.

Open House

We went to Open House at Nicholas' school on Friday night. He didn't even care that his dad was there, he was too busy playing with the kids and checking out the classroom toys. He has been saying his teachers name all weekend and then checking with me to make sure he has it right. The first day is tomorrow!

Good-bye Nap Time

I hate to say it but nap time is a thing of the past. We are in the middle of week three of napless days. I should be adjusting by now but I really miss those two hours of free time. Our house looks like a war zone and by the time Jason gets home both Nicholas and I are cranky and tired. I guess I'll look on the bright side, preschool starts in two weeks. Maybe I'll get to straighten up the house then.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Today was Jason's birthday and Nicholas was so excited! We made a cake, bought special plates, napkins, and balloons, and an ice cream cake. Nicholas had to make a cake at 8:00 this morning for his dad's birthday so it would be ready as soon as he came home. All day long he asked when dad was going to be home to celebrate at his party. We starting listening for the garage door to open around 6 so we could hide and jump out and yell Happy Birthday. We even lit candles on the cake and sang Happy Birthday but Nicholas had to blow out the candles, Jason wasn't allowed to! I think it was the best birthday Jason ever had.

So Sweet

While I was making dinner last night, I looked over and there was Nicholas laying on Alli and gently petting her head. Then he softly said to her, "You'll be in my heart, no matter where you are."

Is it really Thursday already?

My how time flies when a GI bug infects your house. Poor Nicholas started throwing up on Friday night, then it was my turn Saturday night, and then Jason Sunday afternoon. That bug sure flew right through our house and fast! Poor Nicholas just couldn't recover. He was dehydrated on Monday and we had to take him to the ER. The ER is not nearly as glamorous as the ones on ER and Grey's Anatomy. I was highly disappointed. The poor baby threw up all over the waiting room and we didn't get home until midnight. We thought the shot they gave him had finally kicked it out of his system but we were wrong. He threw up again on Tuesday for an hour. I called the Dr and she told me what to do for the next few hours to try to keep things down. If it didn't work, he was going to need an IV. Luckily, he kept down the water and crackers that night but the next morning, he threw up again. So I took him in to see his Dr and she gave us medicine for reflux that would help with the acid churning in his stomach. He seems like a new kid today! He has been playing and eating all day. It is great to see him up and about and not just laying on the couch watching TV and being so quiet. I do miss the hugs and him asking me to hold him, though.

4th of July

We had a wonderful 4th at Joe, Kristyn, and Sebastien's house! Joe, Jason, Sebastien, and Nicholas went fishing on the boat and caught a turtle. Then Hannah came over and the kids swam in the pool and ran through the sprinkler. The kids also painted, to keep them busy after eating but before the fireworks started. Joe and Jason set off the fireworks while Hannah, Nicholas, and Sebastien went swimming in Hannah's pool despite my, Kristyn, Patty, and Grammie's efforts to keep them out. The kids clapped and screamed while the fireworks went off and then went back to swimming while the dad's prepared the next batch. We had a great day! Happy 4th everyone!

Singing in the Garage

Jason and Nicholas were out in the garage working on organizing things before the baby comes. I was in the kitchen putting dishes in the dishwasher. I could hear them out there talking and working and then all of a sudden I hear Jason singing, "Akuna Matata, Akuna Matata, it means no worries for the rest of our days." Then I hear Nicholas, "Akuna Matata, worries the rest of days." Back to Jason, "Akuna Matata, it means no worries." Nicholas, "Akuna Matata, no worries." And on it went, the sweetest song I had ever heard!

Cars

This movie trip was much more successful than the last. Nicholas watched the movie for an entire hour. Jason made a trip to the bathroom with Nicholas in tow. Once they returned, Nicholas said, "Let's go home, I want my toys." So away we went. I will buy this movie once it's released, I really would like to know what happens in the end.

4th of July Party

Our playgroup celebrated the 4th a little early yesterday. The kids played in the plastic pools and sprinklers in Kristyn's yard. Then we made a necklace with red and blue stars. Nicholas only put four stars on his, then he went back to the pool. At least he made one, when we first started playgroup he would not participate in anything. He even sat and colored with Sebastien and Hannah for a little while after the kids went back to playing. The highlight of the morning was when he and Sebastien locked themselves in Sebastien's room and wouldn't let me in. I found the tool Kristyn uses to pop the lock and put Nicholas right into time out. Then I went back in for Sebastien but he was hiding inside his easel and would not let go. I think he was a little afraid of Miss Trisha, that was the first time he didn't listen to me when I asked him to do something. All in all, it was a nice party, thanks Kristyn!

Fort DeSoto

We went on an adventure yesterday to the beach! Mrs. Starks, Lauren, Josh, Conner, Miss Kristyn, and Bash all piled into our car to head off for an exciting adventure! Oh yes, we all piled into my car, not just the people but beach chairs, coolers, towels, and toys as well. The weather was beautiful and the kids stayed in the water all day unless they needed food or a drink. The kids even buried Conner in the sand. Poor Nicholas ended up with a little sunburn because I forgot to reapply the lotion but he's fine today. What a perfect day!

Barbie in Fairytopia

Yes, you read that correctly. We went to see Barbie in Fairytopia with Nicholas on Father's Day. I told Nicholas we couldn't go when he first saw the commercial. Jason told him yes when they watched the commercial together that same night. So I bought the tickets and off we went to see Barbie. Nicholas absolutely loved it. The same child that wanted to leave 15 minutes into The Wild, had his eyes glued to the stage filled with flying fairies and Barbie. The first half lasted 40 minutes and when the lights went up, Jason said, "That's it, Barbie is over." Nicholas said OK and we went to get the car. I thought we should stay since Nicholas loved it so much. Jason was ready to go so I gave in since it was Father's Day. At least he didn't ask us to buy him the pink fairy wings, that might have sent Jason over the edge.

What a Long Day!

Tropical Storm Alberto is pouring down on us. I don't know if it is the air pressure or just the rain in general that has both Nicholas and Alli riled up today. This morning she scratched his face and eyelid. It's all red and he keeps rubbing it. Then Sebastien came over to play and the two of them, running as fast as they can, crashed into each other head on. They still have red marks on their heads. I just don't think this day is ever going to end. I can't wait for Jason to get home!

Gatorland

We went to Orlando to visit Gatorland yesterday. Nicholas had a great time feeding the alligators hot dogs. The last time we were there, you had to feed them little silver fish so we skipped that. I think the hot dogs are much better. I couldn't believe how even the big gators jumped for the pieces of hot dog. It was so cute to see Nicholas throw the hot dog and then jump when the gator went to grab it. We also held a baby alligator and had our picture taken. Nicholas is making a face, I think once he actually touched the gator, the whole thing wasn't as exciting as it sounded in the beginning. I can't wait to the picture in his scrapbook!

We Survived!

Jason is finally home and things went much better than I had expected. I was planning on the crying and screaming each and every day until he came back. Luckily, there was only one time we had a little and that was after talking to him on the phone. I think going to Nana's and Poppy's really helped. It was a great distraction at the end of the trip. We even went to the beach and Nicholas went underwater with Nana. Nicholas also enjoyed the mall, he kept asking to go back. Maybe he is turning into a shopper . . .

Under the Sea

We went to the beach today with our friends Kristyn and Sebastien. Nicholas was like a fish. He was in the water the whole time. He even jumped into the water and let his head go under! When he came up for air he yelled, "I went under the sea, mommy!" I couldn't believe that my child was actually putting his whole head in the water. I guess he'll just do what he wants when he is good and ready and not a minute before.

Mother's Day

Nana, Poppy, and Uncle Markie were here for Mother's Day. We had a great day together. We swam, went shopping, and had a nice dinner. Unfortunately, poor Nicholas had a tummy ache after dinner. He complained about it for quite some time so we took his temperature. It was 101 so Jason gave him some Tylenol. I suggested not giving the medicine since his belly wasn't feeling good. As soon as he swallowed, he started throwing up. We were laying on our bed so I grabbed him and he continued to throw up all the way to the bathroom. We were both covered and Jason was gagging from looking at it. He almost threw up, too. Luckily, Nana came to the rescue and cleaned everything up! I hope everyone else enjoyed their day!

Lithia Springs

Our playgroup went to Lithia Springs yesterday. It was just like the beach! Nicholas spent the whole two hours in the water with his friends. The water does not get very deep in the section we were in so I just sat in my chair and made sure his head was above water! I was really amazed that he was in the water so long since he hasn't gone in our pool since his last swimming lesson.

Pet "Snake"

Yesterday, Jason bought Nicholas this Nerd's rope candy that somewhat resembles a snake. Nicholas decided to name it Mr. Snake and put it inside of a Tupperware container that is it's home. I must add here that the home is similar to the one Sebastien's snakes are sleeping in while laying their eggs. His snake eats Halloween sprinkles and sleeps in a cupcake tin. What an imagination!

Big Brother

Oh yes! Nicholas is going to be a big brother! I am 5 and a 1/2 weeks pregnant! So far my estimated due date is December 24th but the first ultrasound in a month will give us a better idea. We haven't really filled him in yet, but we have asked if he would like a baby sister or brother. To Jason's great dismay, Nicholas' reply is always "sister!" He just loves baby Logan so I am hoping this a good sign and he will give the new baby just as much love as he does Logan. If not, Nana can always come over and rescue me!

Swimming Practice

I attempted to practice what Nicholas learned on Friday while we were in the pool yesterday. I even went under the water to demonstrate how easy and fun it was. Nicholas refused to join me. The only thing he was willing to practice was blowing bubbles in the water. He made me swim on the floating barbell over and over. I tried to pull him in and put his arms on it but that was just not happening. I guess we'll try again today.

Swimming Lessons

Nicholas started swimming lessons today. His instructor, Heidi, kept him swimming for 20 minutes. She suggested that we put away the tubes and use a floating barbell to help him learn. So, I have put all the tubes in the shed and we are going to practice, practice, practice this weekend!

3 Year Old Doctor Visit

Although the first 20 minutes were spent screaming, "I don't want to go in there, I don't want to see the doctor!" while clinging to my shirt and drooling everywhere, the rest of the visit went very well. Dr. Thole confirmed my suspicions that the night terrors are common in stubborn children and that it is a phase that will pass. She also said, and this is one of the many reasons I think she is the best doctor on the planet, that flossing is not necessary. She was even laughing that the dentist suggested it. After all, we all have met the screaming, I'm not going to do it Nicholas. He weighs 30 pounds and is 40 inches tall. She predicts he will be 6 foot 2 or 3. Then she checked his eyes, ears, nose, throat, and teeth and said he is very healthy and very smart. Thank goodness that is over! Oh, did I mention that at the four year visit they get 3 booster shots?

It's too Quiet Out There

While Nicholas and Sebastien were riding trucks in the garage today, I was putting things away in the kitchen. Just so there is a visual, the kitchen is literally two feet away. All of a sudden, I can't hear the rolling of truck tires against the cement. I peer out the door and there they are, pulling their pants up and standing in front of a large puddle on the floor of the garage.

Trip to the Dentist

Today was Nicholas' six month check up at the dentist. I followed him into the room and once he realized that he needed to sit on the chair, all h-e double hockey sticks broke loose. The hygienest asked me to sit in the room next door. I could her him crying, well, more like screeching, through the closed door. Another hygienist brought him out to me when he was finished and she asked if we always have to do this. I smiled and said yes, haircuts, the doctor, clipping his nails, and brushing his teeth at night. She seemed shocked but politely responded that maybe I should give him a reward when he doesn't fight us after a certain number of nights in a row. Yeah, great idea, lady. I know my parents didn't reward me for good hygiene and I am not about to start that with my child. She must be one of those parents that doesn't think the teams should keep score in sports because everyone is a winner. Then the nice receptionist told me that Nicholas' over all dental health was good but we need to floss his teeth once a day. Could she not hear my screaming child?

The Easter Egg Hunt

Today was our easter hunt at playgroup. Krisyn went outside an hour before the kids were to arrive and put over 500 eggs out on her lawn. The kids brought their baskets and waited inside until everyone was there. We let the kids outside and they filled up their baskets. I wasn't sure if Nicholas would participate but he absolutely loved it! He was picking up all the eggs but was really excited when he found a pink (his favorite color) one. Then he wouldn't let go of his basket so I could put it in the car when we were finished. It took a few minutes but I finally convinced him. Once we came home, he opened a few eggs and then carried the basket everywhere he went. When Alli tried to sniff it, he yelled at her, "No Alli, these are MY eggs!" Right now the eggs are taking a nap with him!

Baby Logan

We went to Kristyn's house today to visit with Carrie, Brooke, and Baby Logan. While I was holding him, Nicholas ended up sitting with us. He just loved the baby! He was kissing him, rubbing his feet and belly, and helping him with his pacifier. When Logan fussed a little, Nicholas rubbed his arm and said "Calm down, baby, calm down." It was just the most adorable thing!

Swimming

We have heated our pool to bath tub temperature. This means that everyday since last Thursday we have spent quite a bit of time in the pool. Nicholas really wants to swim without his tube on so I am going to call and get him into swimming lessons. I'll bet all of you northerners are jealous!

Super Nana

After watching Nicholas for four days last week, Nana traveled over to our house for a couple of days this past week. Jason and I had a dinner we couldn't get out of on Friday night but not a babysitter in sight. One was working and the other was at the Ellen show in Orlando. So Super Nana came to the rescue and drove over on Thursday. I guess the visits were too close together because all Nicholas could say to her when he woke up and saw her was "Go home, nana. Go home, see Poppy, Nana." He wouldn't let her do anything for him or even pick him up. He was much better on Friday, even though he still wasn't quite sure of what was going on. I think he was waiting for us to leave and not come back for a few days again. Luckily, by Friday night, he was distracted by the pool and the sandbox enough to let us escape out the front door. Nana did not have trouble with him and they were both sounds asleep and snoring when we checked on them!

How's Your Day?

Every night when Jason gets home, he asks me "How was your day mom?" To which I reply, "Good, how was your day, dad?" The other night the three of us were sitting at the dinner table when Nicholas said, "How was your day, dad?" We looked at each other surprised and Jason said, "It was busy baby, how was your day?" Nicholas said, "Good, daddy. How was your day, mommy?" Since then, periodically throughout the day I will hear, "How's your day, mommy?" and every single night he asks Jason, too. He is just too much!

Finally - Pictures!

At last, we found a place that can actually take wonderful pictures of Nicholas! The Picture People did a fantastic job today! I can't believe how well behaved Nicholas was and how well the pictures have come out! I am going back this afternoon to pick out and bring home the pictures. I don't know how I am going to control myself from not buying them all. After two failed attempts at Halloween and Christmas I feel like I have won the jackpot! Woohoo!

Home Again

Jason and I have returned from our tropical vacation and Nicholas is home from Nana's. I think we are all still adjusting even though we have been home for four days now. Nicholas has been acting up, I guess to punish us for leaving him. I am pretty sure he has forgotten what the word no means! There has been lots of crying and many time outs. Hopefully by the end of this week things will be back to normal!

Happy 3rd Birthday

Yesterday was Nicholas' third birthday. It is so hard to believe that he is actually three years old. It just doesn't seem like that long ago that I was pregnant with him! He asked for Thomas the Train like Sebastien, with the wooden track and trains plus Cranky the Crane. This was the first time he has actually asked us for something other than a truck since he was 18 months. We bought it for him and gave it to him first thing in the morning before Jason left for work. I thought this would be best since we wouldn't be able to pry him away from it at bedtime if we gave it to him at 6:30 when Jason came home. He played with it all morning while watching the Thomas the Train video his Great Grammie gave him. Then he went to Gymboree while Kristyn and I celebrated at Panera. When he woke up from his nap, his friends Josh, Conner, and Lauren (who babysits for him) came over for cake. Then Toni stopped by with a bridge to go with the train tracks. Jason came home and we had a quick dinner before his dad stopped by to give Nicholas a remote control truck and have a piece of cake. In between all of this, there were phone calls from Nana, Poppy, Uncle Markie, Aunt Wendy, Grammie, and Aunt Missy plus cards that came in the mail and lots of presents from everyone, too! It was quite a day for our little guy, he is just amazing! Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and gifts!

A Conversation

"How you feeling daddy? You have the sick buggy?" "No, baby, I feel good today." "Oh, you spit out the sick buggy daddy? You feel better?" "Yes, I spit out the sick buggy and I feel better." "OK. I love you daddy." "I love you, too" "Have a good day, daddy." "You have a good day, too."

3rd Birthday Party

Today was the big party at Pump It Up! I think it's every mother's dream party place. We went from room to room with just the people in our party. The pizza was delivered from next door and passed out by the coordinator. She set up the plates, cups, juice, etc. and sliced and passed out the cake. The kids really seemed to enjoy it, too. Nicholas loved dragging Jason down the slides and through the obstacle course. I think all the dads had a turn on the slide so Jason wasn't the only big kid having a good time. We missed Nana and Poppy, though. They can watch the video and see the pictures next weekend. Thanks for coming everyone!

Epcot

My brilliant idea was that Epcot would be the least crowded on a Sunday morning because the World Showcase doesn't open up until 11. What do I know, it was packed! Nicholas did not want to ride anything, again! He really enjoyed The Living Seas exhibit, it is now all about Nemo. There was a shark to play on and tiny baby Nemo's swimming in a tank. We only stayed about two hours because we were all tired from sleeping in the same bed the night before. Nicholas talked Jason into buying him a train on our way out. Even though we had a great time, I think we'll wait until the fall when it's less crowded to go again!

The Beach Club

One thing I do not understand is the Disney bus system. Our three year old can ride the Disney bus sitting all by himself in the seat, there is not a seat belt in sight on that bus. I guess Disney has it's own set of laws. Anyway, we went for a little swim before dinner. The air was freezing, Jason was complaining he was going to end up with pneumonia again. Nicholas loved it, though. The water was like a bath tub so we stayed in for about an hour. Then we went to a cute old fashioned soda shop and had hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner. We also had root beer floats, smoothies, and a banana split.

Animal Kingdom

We thought for sure that it wouldn't be crowded because the last time we were there it wasn't very popular. It had just opened and there wasn't much to do. When we entered the park and I saw the signs for Mt. Everest, I then remembered the commercials for it and how FL residents get to ride it first. I watch plenty of TV, why couldn't I have remembered this sooner? Nicholas was not thrilled with the number of people there and wouldn't ride anything. He played in the Bone Yard, it's like a park with a Disney kick to it. We tried to get him on the kids rides but he couldn't stand the people all around us. We did manage to get him on a train to the petting zoo in Rafiki's area. That was it, though. He and Jason also enjoyed several popsicles and Mickey shaped ice creams.

A Family Trip

We are going to Disney today. We have a room tonight at the Beach Club so we can venture into the parks again tomorrow. There is even a water park at our hotel. I am hoping that Nicholas is going to enjoy all the activity now that he is older. When we tried this last year it wasn't pretty. I think he's ready and it's a short visit. We'll see what happens.

The Lizard

There was a little brown lizard in my bathroom the other day which was discovered by Alli and Nicholas. Nicholas kept trying to touch it but it ran it away too quickly. Alli stopped it with her paw and from then on it wasn't moving quite as quickly. Nicholas decided to touch it once it couldn't go far. After several touches, he picked it up, then dropped it. I figured it was a good idea to let it outside since Nicholas was brave enough to pick it up. I went towards the front door while Nicholas picked it up and then I heard a piercing scream and crying. I ran back to the bathroom and Nicholas was crying hysterically saying, "Lizard bite me mommy, lizard bite me!" At that moment Jason called and was ever so helpful, saying that some lizards are poisonous. So I washed the screaming Nicholas' hands and held him until he finally stopped crying. Then I called Poppy to make sure it wasn't poisonous. He laughed, said it wasn't, and then Nicholas had to tell him and Nana about what happened. He made both of them smooch his bite and listen to him cry a little for that extra bit of sympathy.

Thomas the Train

Nicholas has been asking for Thomas the Train and Cranky the Crane for his birthday for two weeks now. Jason and I have been trying to avoid buying Thomas things since we have so many trucks. Since Sebastien has so many Thomas pieces, Nicholas loves going over there to play and wants a few for himself. I was really hoping to avoid it since the track is wooden and takes up most of Kristyn's living room. Plus, there are tons of add ons and all different trains to buy and then have cluttering up our family room. He also wants a Cabbage Patch Kid with hair that turns different colors when you touch it. That takes up much less space so maybe I will buy that . . .

Road Rage

While trying to find a parking space at Walmart, I mumbled, "Come on, go!" From a little voice behind me that was supposed to have headphones on and be watching Spongebob, I heard, "Come on, donkey, move it!"

The Sick Buggy

Jason was sick in bed for two days last week. Nicholas kept asking him what was wrong and why didn't he want to play trucks. Finally Jason answered, "Dad's sick, he has a bug and wants to stay in bed." Nicholas replied, "You sick, daddy, you have a buggy?" "Yes, I am sick and have a bug." Nicholas climbed up into the bed, laid down next to his dad, looked at me and said, "I sick mommy, I have the sick buggy like daddy."

The Dirt Pile

We have had some work done on the outside of our house in the past week. This includes a huge load of sand being dumped by a dump truck. That was a monumental event for Nicholas but the best part is the pile of sand on the porch in the backyard. We have spent an enormous amount of time with dump trucks, shovels, rakes, backhoes, front end loaders, and bulldozers working in the dirt. The best part is that it has been sunny and beautiful for the past two days so I have been sitting the sun with a book! I am hoping that Nana and Poppy will buy Nicholas a sand box for the backyard for his birthday. Then I can work on my tan!

Sebastien's Birthday Party

Today was Sebastien's birthday party at Dinosaur World. Nicholas spent his time on the baby swing in the playground. I think we were able to pry him away from it twice - the first time for pizza and the second to feed the goldfish in the pond. He didn't even eat any of the giant cookie with frosting. I ate it for him, I couldn't let it go to waste!

Manatees

Kristyn and I took Nicholas and Sebastien to see the manatees at the TECO power plant this morning. As soon as we arrived, the boys started running towards the entrance. Sebastien was yelling about seeing the manatees while Nicholas was yelling about the crane up on top of the power plant! The crane was pretty much all he talked about the whole time we were there. He looked in the water at the manatees and said yes when I asked if he could see them. Then he would start pointing to the crane again. I pointed out the baby manatee in the water and he pointed out the forklift driving around. He really liked the manatee skeleton in the "museum." He called it a dinosaur.

Hoodwinked

We took Nicholas to the movies yesterday afternoon to see Hoodwinked. In the middle of the movie he needed to go to the potty. Jason rushed him to the mens room where they did their business. When Jason was finished, Nicholas clapped his hands and yelled "Woohoo my daddy! You did a good job!"

Saturday, February 04, 2006

Twinkle Twinkle

Nicholas woke up this morning around 7 and this is what we heard through the monitor: "Twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder what you are twinkle twinkle twinkle twinkle twinkle little star twinkle twinkle twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder twinkle twinkle TWINKLE TWINKLE"

Rainy Day

As another cold front comes through, rain is pouring down around us. In Florida, rain is equivalent to a major snow and ice storm. Our playgroup plans to go to the park were no longer possible so we headed to Chuck E. Cheese where a kid can be a kid. We received a nice surprise by winning 15 free tokens. Nicholas only rode Bob the Builder five times instead of the entire time, definitely a plus for me! All of us moms complained about being soaking wet every time we passed each other but suffered through for the sake of our kids. When Nicholas and I finally pulled in the driveway for one last dash through the rain, he exclaimed, "I soaking wet mommy! Change my clothes!"

Good Job!

Today is the fourth day of Nicholas wearing underwear all day long. We have had a few accidents here and there but nothing major. He is doing a great job and always remembers to ask for his treat when he is finished. (The treat is usually a starburt, a few skittles, or a few M&Ms.) The best part was when I was in the bathroom yesterday and Nicholas came in. He started clapping for me and then said, "Woohoo, mommy! Good job! Let's get a treat!"

Ouch

Poor Nicholas fell and bumped his head yesterday. He likes to stand on the sill of the window in the dining room and look outside. We have told him several times not to because he could fall and get hurt. While I was emptying the dishwasher and Jason was on the phone with his dad, Nicholas climbed up. All of a sudden we heard a loud bang and then Nicholas screaming at the top of his lungs. He had a huge knot on the back of his head. He is lucky he didn't crack his head open. The poor thing was clinging to me and cried for at least 15 minutes. (It was probably less in reality but the crying always seems like it goes on and on and on!)

Boys Only

Jason decided to go to Lowe's today to pick up shelves for the playroom. Nicholas wanted to go with his dad so he said "I put on my shoes, my socks, my pants, my shirt." "I go get shelves with daddy, mommy stay home Alli." Once they were both ready Nicholas said "Bye Mommy. Have a good day." Then he gave me a big smooch and waved good-bye. He cracks us up!

Donuts

At playgroup today the snack was munchkin donuts for the kids and regular donuts for the moms. Nicholas spotted the Boston Creme I was munching on from across the cul-de-sac. He came racing over on his backhoe just in time for my last bite. When he realized there wasn't anything left, he began to panic and ask for a big donut. I let him pick out a regular donut and he chose the one with chocolate frosting on the top. He sat down on the sidewalk and proceeded to eat all the frosting off the top with a few accidental bites of donut. The other kids raced around playing with trucks, trains, and bikes. Nicholas just sat and sat, licking away. He was covered in frosting from head to toe. I think if he had realized that there was frosting on his clothes, he would have licked that off, too!

Backhoe

Sebastien and Nicholas both have the same Home Depot backhoe to ride on. For some mysterious reason, they think one is better than the other. Kristyn and I can't figure out how they know the difference but one is always better than the other. The two of them argued over who was going to ride this special one even though the exact same thing was sitting right next to it. We thought buying two of some of the things they fight over most would help. What were we thinking?

Playroom

We have decided to put together a playroom for Nicholas. Our guest bedroom is hardly used and the door is always closed. It is such a waste of space. Plus, our family room floor is completely cluttered with trucks of every shape and size. So we are getting rid of the furniture in there and putting in a daybed. Jason is going to throw together some shelves and there is already a TV with cable. Now maybe we will be able to see the floor in the family room as well as something other than Spongebob on the TV!

Poor Nana

While Jason and I were at the hospital on Tuesday, Nana was in charge of Nicholas. Nicholas likes to ride his big wheel around and around the pool. It started when the baby fence came down for the brick pavers. (We can't wait until the fence is back up, it's really a pain that it has been down for so long.) He's been doing it for over a month now. So Nana is letting Alli out and Nicholas is riding around the pool. All of a sudden Nana hears a splash and Nicholas and his big wheel are in the pool. Luckily Nicholas landed right near the edge without hitting his head. Nana was able to reach right in and grab him. He was choking and coughing but still breathing. Poor Nana almost had a heart attack! He talked about the incident all afternoon and Nana thought for sure he would tell us everything as soon as we came home. He didn't say a word to us. Once Nana told the story he started talking about it. "I fell in pool my bike I choke." "Nana save me." It's definitely time for swimming lessons!

Sick Days

Poor Nicholas has been coughing since Saturday. Not one of us has had a full night's sleep since. We thought he just had a little cold that he caught from his friend Sebastien. Then he started coughing and couldn't stop or breath. Monday and Tuesday he was coughing so hard he was throwing up. It was very sad to see. So we decided to take him to the doctor for a stronger cough medicine. She checked him and found that he had a horrible ear infection as well. The poor child has been suffering for days with an ear infection. He has been on antibiotics for two days now and is doing much better. He tells everyone "I sick. The doctor checked my ear." "I choke when I cough. I sick." "I don't feel good. I sick." He'll probably still be saying these things when he feels better!

Swimming

Ever since we had pavers put down on our pool deck, the baby fence has been down. At first this wasn't a problem at all. Until Nicholas realized that he could whip his clothes off and hop in whenever he feels like it. Last week this wasn't too much of an issue. The temperature outside was around 80 while the pool temperature was probably in the 60's. Way too cold for me or any other adult but just right for him. Today, the temperature outside is in the 50's and there was Nicholas all naked and ready to go. He was very unhappy when I wouldn't let him hop in. I just don't want a popsicle for a son. I am sure he is dreaming of ways to get around me while he takes his nap.

Clothing Issues

Nicholas was at it again today. He went over to his friend Sebastien's house to play while I went to the doctor. When I returned, there he was, sitting on the floor with only his diaper on. Kristyn tried to get his clothes back on but he just wasn't having any part of it. I guess we should just consider it a compliment that he is comfortable enough there to take it all off. At least his diaper was on, right?

Did he really just say that?

The other night Nicholas and Jason were playing dragon together. The game of dragon usually ends when Nicholas starts kicking and Jason gets mad. Nicholas' little feet are like hammers when he starts kicking, it's really painful. So, the kicking starts which leads to Jason claiming that Nicholas is going to go to time-out. I say claiming because as Nicholas and I both know, it's pretty much an empty threat. Well doesn't Nicholas just surprise us both by saying "Calm down, daddy, calm down." The things he comes up with, it just amazes me!

Happy New Year

Our New Year's Eve and Day was uneventful. We spent our weekend riding the trucks, visiting Grampa, and at the park. I tried to explain the new year to Nicholas but he looked at me as if to say, "Mom, do you really think I care about that when I am playing with my trucks?" Oh well. Happy New Year everyone!
